Animoca Brands Secures Abu Dhabi Regulatory Approval to Manage Investment Funds for Non-Retail Clients

Animoca Brands announced on Monday that it has successfully secured the necessary regulatory approval to manage investment funds for non-retail clients in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing expansion of its institutional asset management business. The company, which originally established itself as a developer and publisher of mobile games before pivoting heavily into the realms of blockchain gaming and venture capital investment, views this development as a major step forward in its evolution across the Middle East and international financial markets.

The authorization was officially granted to its subsidiary, Animoca Asset Management (AD) Limited, by the Abu Dhabi Global Market’s Financial Services Regulatory Authority, commonly known as the FSRA. This regulatory green light empowers the subsidiary to oversee and manage investment funds that pool capital exclusively from professional, sophisticated investors rather than the general public. By focusing on non-retail and institutional capital pools, Animoca can tailor its asset management strategies to high-net-worth entities, corporations, and specialized funds seeking exposure to cutting-edge digital asset portfolios and Web3 technologies under a robust regulatory framework.

The formal approval, which was announced on Monday, took official effect on October 13. This milestone successfully brings to completion a thorough regulatory journey that initially began with the granting of in-principle approval back in November 2025. During the intervening months between the initial green light and the final authorization, Animoca Brands was actively securing other vital regulatory credentials across the wider region. Notably, the firm also secured a prominent license in Dubai this past February issued by the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority. That license enabled the company to provide virtual asset brokerage and investment management services specifically targeted at institutional and qualified investors within the United Arab Emirates and neighboring markets.

The trajectory of Animoca Brands reflects a broader transformation within the global technology and entertainment sectors over the past decade. The company was originally spun off from its parent mobile game developer, Animoca, back in 2014. In its early years, it focused primarily on developing and publishing video games based on globally recognized licensed brands alongside a portfolio of original titles for mobile operating systems. However, as the digital landscape evolved, the company executed a strategic pivot toward blockchain technology in 2018. Through this visionary shift, it rapidly built an extensive and influential investment portfolio that included early-stage backing for foundational Web3 companies and platforms, such as the major non-fungible token marketplace OpenSea, blockchain innovator Dapper Labs, and Sky Mavis, the celebrated developer behind the play-to-earn phenomenon Axie Infinity.

This evolutionary path was further underscored in a comprehensive investor update released by the company in September. In that communication, management detailed a broader, strategic transition that is currently underway, shifting the organization from a traditional digital asset and Web3 operator into a fully regulated financial services institution capable of operating seamlessly across multiple international jurisdictions. This corporate realignment mirrors a wider, industry-wide trend as prominent crypto-native companies increasingly seek to bridge the gap between decentralized technologies and traditional financial services, bringing institutional-grade compliance and structure to the digital economy.

Under the framework of this ongoing strategic transition, digital assets are steadily taking on a much more formalized and institutional role across Animoca’s overall business operations. Rather than focusing solely on speculative retail tokens or early-stage gaming ventures, the company’s operational lens has increasingly sharpened toward areas such as stablecoins, the tokenization of real-world assets, and sophisticated treasury management solutions. By establishing licensed entities in key regional financial hubs like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Animoca Brands is strategically positioning itself to capture institutional capital inflows, providing a reliable, regulated conduit for professional investors looking to participate in the burgeoning digital asset economy under the supervision of respected regulatory bodies.
