Paradigm has officially closed its fourth flagship fund at $1.2 billion, marking a significant strategic evolution for the prominent crypto venture capital firm as it expands its investment scope to encompass artificial intelligence, robotics, and other frontier technologies.
The firm announced the successful fundraise on Wednesday, detailing that its latest vehicle is designed to deploy capital "first in crypto, and now across AI, robotics and other frontiers." Despite the broadened scope, Paradigm emphasized that its commitment to the digital asset ecosystem remains robust. "We continue investing in crypto and the reinvention of markets and the financial system," the firm stated, pointing to recent prominent commitments in the sector, including the crypto perpetuals exchange Hyperliquid and the prediction markets platform Kalshi.
Founded in 2018, Paradigm has established itself as one of the most influential backers in the digital asset industry, previously raising more than $4 billion across three dedicated crypto funds. Its decision to move into artificial intelligence reflects a broader, accelerating trend among historically crypto-exclusive venture capital institutions that have been drawn to the lucrative, rapidly expanding AI sector.
Earlier reports from The Wall Street Journal in February indicated that Paradigm was targeting up to $1.5 billion for a new vehicle aimed at AI and robotics. According to reports, firm leadership chose to broaden its investment mandate to avoid being constrained by narrow asset definitions and to ensure it did not miss out on compelling, high-growth deals. Furthermore, leadership noted a growing technical and structural overlap between blockchain technology and artificial intelligence, particularly in the development and deployment of autonomous AI agents.
This intersection has already influenced major players across the digital asset economy. Crypto exchanges such as Coinbase and Crypto.com have made substantial strategic bets on AI agents, introducing specialized tooling and updating their trading platforms to seamlessly cater to automated software bots.

Crypto Funding Sinks as AI Funding Peaks
Paradigm is far from alone in expanding its investment thesis beyond traditional blockchain boundaries. A growing cohort of crypto-native venture firms has similarly restructured their funds to capture opportunities in emerging technologies. Last month, Framework Ventures closed its fourth fund at $400 million, earmarked for investments spanning crypto, artificial intelligence, robotics, and energy infrastructure. Similarly, in May, crypto venture firm Haun Ventures secured $1 billion to back early-stage crypto startups while simultaneously branching out into artificial intelligence for the first time in its operational history.
These strategic pivots coincide with a broader shift in global venture capital deployment. Global venture funding reached a historic milestone of $510 billion in the first half of the year, a record-shattering figure for half-year investments that surpassed the $440 billion recorded across the entirety of the previous year, according to data published by Crunchbase on July 2.
Artificial intelligence companies commanded the vast majority of this capital influx. Massive funding rounds secured by industry heavyweights such as OpenAI and Anthropic alone accounted for more than 40 percent of all global venture funding during the first half of the year.
In contrast, venture capital flowing into the digital asset sector captured a much smaller share of the broader market. Total funding into crypto startups during the first half of the year reached $10.8 billion, according to analytics compiled by Cryptorank.
Despite diversifying its portfolio, Paradigm underscored that its commitment to frontier technologies extends well beyond software and financial primitives. Among its non-crypto allocations, the firm highlighted backing for the autonomous drone delivery service Zipline, the robotic metal fabrication platform SendCutSend, and Nous Research, an artificial intelligence company recognized for developing the open-source AI model Hermes Agent.
At the same time, the firm emphasized that it will maintain its deep roots in foundational research and technical development within the blockchain ecosystem. Paradigm noted that it will continue to support projects that accelerate the crypto industry, pointing to its development of blockchain tooling infrastructure like Foundry and Reth, alongside participation in emerging AI and verification projects such as EVMbench and Centaur.
