Bitcoin ETFs Snap Two-Week Losing Streak Despite Late-Week Outflows and October Struggles

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) managed to close out a highly volatile and choppy week in positive territory, though only by a narrow margin. Following a wave of heavy institutional capital exiting the market toward the end of the trading week, the broader digital asset ecosystem experienced a widespread cooling-off period. This pullback dragged down not only Bitcoin products but also major alternative cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and Solana, leaving October performance metrics bruised across the board.

According to institutional tracking data, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs shed $137.9 million on Friday alone, marking the second consecutive day of net outflows. This late-week capital flight totaled approximately $773.5 million over a brutal two-day slide. The sudden reversal significantly ate into an otherwise robust $1.07 billion inflow run that had accumulated steadily from Monday through Wednesday.

Despite the sharp turbulence at the close of the week, the funds ultimately finished the period up roughly $301 million overall. This net positive result successfully snapped a two-week losing streak that had previously weighed heavily on investor sentiment.

October’s Seasonal Promise Fades Into the Red

Even with the modest weekly victory, October—a month historically celebrated by cryptocurrency market participants for its strong seasonal price performance—remains firmly in the red. Midweek trading sessions had briefly injected optimism into the market, pushing the monthly ledger back into positive territory. However, a massive wave of liquidations and institutional profit-taking on Thursday saw $635.6 million exit the ecosystem in a single session. This represented the largest single-day outflow of the month, instantly flipping the aggregate monthly performance back downward.

As a result, spot Bitcoin ETFs are currently down about $314 million for the month of October. Yet, looking at the broader historical picture since their landmark regulatory approval and market debut in January 2024, the funds maintain a remarkably strong foundation. Cumulative net inflows stand at an impressive $57.6 billion, with total net assets hovering around $100.2 billion.

The wider digital asset ETF landscape fared similarly during the end-of-week correction. Ethereum ETFs eked out a modest $4.4 million inflow on Friday, but this minor gain was heavily overshadowed by a weekly loss of roughly $221 million. This brings Ethereum-based funds down by approximately $1.18 billion for the month of October. Meanwhile, Solana ETFs experienced zero net flows on Friday following an $8.9 million exit on Thursday, leaving them down by about $68 million for the month.

Understanding Spot Crypto ETFs

Spot cryptocurrency ETFs represent a major bridge between traditional finance and the digital asset economy. By holding the underlying physical asset—such as Bitcoin or Ethereum—directly in secure custody, these financial products trade on traditional stock exchanges just like ordinary shares of major corporations. This structure allows both retail and institutional investors to gain direct exposure to cryptocurrency price movements through a regular brokerage account, eliminating the need to manage private keys or interact with specialized crypto exchanges.

Since their respective market launches—Bitcoin funds in January 2024 and Ethereum funds that July, followed by the introduction of Solana funds late last year—these vehicles have transformed institutional adoption. Because issuers are required to report net creation and redemption flows on a daily basis, and because a significant portion of the capital originates from institutional portfolios and registered financial advisers, these flow figures have rapidly evolved into one of the most closely watched gauges of overall market sentiment.

Broad Market Weakness and Macroeconomic Pressures

The crypto market’s struggles at the end of the week were mirrored by sliding asset prices heading into the weekend. Bitcoin fell 1.1% over a 24-hour window, settling near $80,490 by Saturday, and registered a 1.2% decline for the week according to market data.

Other major cryptocurrencies suffered steeper pullbacks. Ethereum dropped 2.6% over the same period to roughly $2,344, while Solana declined 2.8% to hover around $101. Consequently, the total global cryptocurrency market capitalization slipped 1.2% down to $2.79 trillion.

Market analysts noted that this digital asset weakness did not occur in a vacuum. It closely followed a broader midweek selloff across global traditional financial markets. During that period, macroeconomic pressures mounted as crude oil prices climbed past $111 a barrel and high-flying artificial intelligence stocks experienced a sudden downward correction, prompting risk-averse behavior across multiple asset classes.

Shifting Sentiment on Prediction Markets

As prices drifted lower and volatility picked up, market participants adjusted their short-term expectations. Traders on Myriad, a decentralized prediction market developed by Decrypt’s parent company Dastan, have grown increasingly bearish regarding Bitcoin’s final price settlement for October.

Prediction market participants now assign a 43% probability to Bitcoin dropping as low as $77,500 before the month concludes, representing a notable increase from the 32% probability recorded just a day earlier. Furthermore, traders are pricing in an 18% chance of the leading cryptocurrency slipping further down to the $75,000 threshold.

Conversely, expectations for an aggressive upside breakout have cooled significantly. The odds of Bitcoin successfully breaking past $87,500 before the end of the month plummeted from 17% down to 10%. Meanwhile, Solana bulls retained only a razor-thin advantage over bears, with market odds for a push toward $160 over a drop to $40 slipping from 54.9% down to 51.6%. Expectations for Ethereum remained relatively stable, with the likelihood of reaching $3,000 before falling to $1,500 holding steady at 61.3%.

The week had initially kicked off on an optimistic note. Sentiment received an early boost after J.P. Morgan Asset Management released a long-term projection forecasting annualized returns of approximately 10% for Bitcoin over the coming decade. However, in the immediate wake of subsequent macroeconomic headwinds and ETF outflows, the market has largely settled into what industry analysts have characterized as a cautious "wait-and-see" mode.
