Ethereum core developers representing various client teams recently gathered in the remote Arctic landscape of Svalbard, Norway, for a semi-regular interoperability and development session. Over the course of the intensive, week-long event, the collaborative engineering teams focused heavily on hardening infrastructure and finalizing preparations for the upcoming network upgrade, designated as Glamsterdam.
The gathering served as a critical operational milestone for the Ethereum ecosystem, bringing together key contributors to synchronize development efforts across diverse client implementations. In addition to technical preparations for the Glamsterdam upgrade, the Svalbard meeting marked a significant organizational inflection point, signaling the formal beginning of a leadership transition for the Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster. This handoff will introduce a new trio of coordinators to guide the cluster through its next phase of architectural evolution and network scaling.
The week-long interoperability summit in Norway provided an ideal backdrop for the complex engineering coordination required to advance Ethereum’s roadmap. As client teams work to ensure stability and robust security across the network, these regular in-person sessions remain vital for resolving edge cases, aligning implementation schedules, and testing early-stage devnets.
The immediate technical horizon for the core development teams centers squarely on the successful deployment of the Glamsterdam upgrade. Work on Glamsterdam is already progressing swiftly from the conceptual phase to active experimentation, with dedicated devnets currently live and undergoing rigorous testing. Beyond Glamsterdam, the teams used the Svalbard gathering to continue preliminary planning and scoping for subsequent milestones, including the Hegotââ upgrade, which has slated the inclusion of FOCIL as a headliner feature on the consensus layer side, alongside ongoing advancements to the Strawmap.
Team Evolution
The transition of leadership within the Ethereum Foundation Protocol cluster represents a natural evolution for a team that has steered some of the network’s most consequential recent milestones. Over the past year, following the formal announcement of the Protocol Cluster, outgoing coordinators Barnabé Monnot, Tim Beiko, and Alex Stokes have dedicated a tremendous amount of effort, vision, and operational support to the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
Although Barnabé Monnot and Tim Beiko are set to move on from the Ethereum Foundation soon, and Alex Stokes will be embarking on a well-deserved sabbatical, the Protocol cluster as it exists today bears the indelible mark of their leadership. Under their guidance, the cluster successfully established dedicated development tracks and orchestrated the major Fusaka mainnet upgrade in December 2025. That release introduced PeerDAS to the network and successfully raised the mainnet gas limit, representing a major stride forward on Ethereum’s long-term path toward a 200M gas target and beyond.
The contributions made by Tim Beiko, Barnabé Monnot, and Alex Stokes have shaped the operational and structural design of the Protocol cluster in ways that will endure long after their active tenure concludes. The wider community has expressed deep gratitude for their foundational work and eagerly anticipates the new professional endeavors each of them will pursue next.
Fortunately, preparations for this leadership handover were seamlessly integrated into the recent Svalbard gathering. The event featured numerous impromptu strategic discussions and collaborative meetings between the incoming and outgoing coordinators. This organic setting allowed the teams to initiate the leadership transition smoothly and effectively without pulling focus away from the primary technical objectives of hardening the network and shipping Glamsterdam.
Stepping into the role of Protocol Cluster Coordinators are three well-established contributors who bring a diverse blend of research depth, engineering expertise, and operational familiarity to the position.
Will Corcoran transitions into the coordination role with a deep background as a Research Coordinator within the Protocol cluster. Through his extensive work on zkVM proving, post-quantum cryptography consensus mechanisms, and the Fast Confirmation Rule, Corcoran has developed broad cross-team and cross-cluster visibility. He has previously facilitated numerous community calls, technical breakout rooms, and in-person protocol events, granting him a comprehensive operational understanding of how the various moving parts within the Protocol’s efforts interconnect.
Kev Wedderburn steps into the leadership group bringing a first-principles approach to technical decision-making. As the leader of the zkEVM team, Wedderburn possesses deep, specialized expertise positioned precisely at the intersection of rigorous academic research and practical software engineering, a perspective that will be crucial as Ethereum continues to scale through layer-2 and zero-knowledge technologies.
Fredrik rounds out the new coordinator trio. Leading Protocol Security and the Trillion Dollar Security project, Fredrik has already been deeply involved in intricate cross-cluster initiatives. His extensive experience in safeguarding protocol infrastructure ensures a continued and rigorous focus on network security as the core development team tackles upcoming upgrades.
What to Expect
With the leadership transition formally underway and the Svalbard interoperability session successfully concluded, the Ethereum core development community is firmly focused on the execution of its near-term and long-term technical roadmap.
The immediate priority remains the hardening and eventual launch of Glamsterdam, supported by the newly active devnets that are already providing valuable telemetry and testing data to client teams. Concurrently, scoping and architectural design for the Hegotââ upgrade are moving forward at a steady pace, highlighted by the planned inclusion of FOCIL as a central feature on the consensus layer. Observers and community members can anticipate further updates regarding the Protocol cluster’s ongoing initiatives, strategic direction, and technical milestones directly from Will Corcoran, Kev Wedderburn, and Fredrik in the coming weeks.
