Framework Ventures, a prominent venture capital firm known for its heavy backing of decentralized finance and crypto infrastructure platforms, has officially closed its fourth fund, securing a substantial $400 million to expand its investment strategy into broader "frontier technology."
The San Francisco-based investment company is setting its sights on a wider horizon than strictly digital assets, allocating capital toward emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, advanced robotics, and next-generation energy systems. Despite this outward expansion, the firm’s leadership has emphasized that the move does not represent a pivot away from its foundational roots in blockchain and crypto.
According to reports, the firm’s co-founders, Vance Spencer and Michael Anderson, confirmed that roughly half of the newly raised $400 million capital has already been deployed into various ventures. However, the founders opted to keep the identities of the fund’s limited partners confidential. This massive capital raise highlights an ongoing and notable trend across the broader digital asset venture capital ecosystem. Increasingly, crypto-native investment funds are looking beyond traditional blockchain boundaries, choosing to back intersecting and emerging technologies while maintaining a firm footing in the crypto economy.
Rather than chasing superficial market trends, Framework’s leadership insists that the expansion into artificial intelligence and hardware-focused sectors is a natural evolution driven by the developer community itself. Co-founder Michael Anderson explained that the firm is following the exact trajectory of its existing network of founders, who are already actively building at the intersections of these advanced technologies.

"We can see these founders leading us in this direction," Anderson noted, pointing out that when visionary builders move into adjacent technological frontiers, institutional investors like Framework must pay attention.
This philosophy is already visible in the firm’s recent deployment track record. Earlier in June, Framework participated in a significant $60 million funding round for Mecka AI, a specialized robotics data startup. Earlier in the year, the firm executed a major cross-industry play by partnering with mortgage lender Better to provide up to $500 million in financing capacity through the Sky stablecoin ecosystem. In tandem with that financing initiative, Framework secured a $45 million equity stake in Better, acquiring approximately 10% of the company’s stock through the arrangement.
These strategic maneuvers demonstrate that Framework Ventures is actively finding ways to bridge traditional financial markets and real-world economic sectors with decentralized technologies, rather than treating Web3 and frontier tech as completely siloed verticals.
Not a Shift Away From Crypto
The launch of Framework’s fourth fund has naturally prompted discussions regarding the shifting priorities of crypto-focused venture capitalists. However, company executives remain adamant that crypto assets and decentralized finance remain central to their investment thesis. The integration of artificial intelligence, robotics, and energy infrastructure is viewed as complementary to, rather than competitive with, their core digital asset portfolios.

Framework Ventures has spent years building a reputation as a conviction-driven investor that navigates volatile market cycles with a focus on long-term infrastructure. Founded in 2019 with the launch of its inaugural fund, the firm initially carved out a niche by backing early-stage decentralized finance projects that have since grown into household names within the Web3 ecosystem.
Over the years, the firm has assembled a robust portfolio featuring some of the most prominent infrastructure layers, automated market makers, and trading platforms in the decentralized economy. According to the company’s official roster, Framework’s portfolio includes major platforms such as Aave, Chainlink, Hyperliquid, Jito Labs, and Plasma. These investments underscore the firm’s historical preference for foundational protocols and liquidity networks that underpin the broader digital asset economy.
Throughout its operational history, Framework has steadily scaled its fundraising capabilities to match the growth of the markets it serves. In 2021, the firm successfully closed a $100 million second fund, followed swiftly by a massive $400 million third fund in April 2022. While those preceding investment vehicles were heavily concentrated on traditional crypto assets and DeFi primitives, the latest $400 million fund marks a structural broadening of the firm’s mandate. By explicitly carving out room for frontier technologies, Framework is positioning itself to capture value wherever its network of founders happens to innovate next.
As the boundaries between decentralized finance, artificial intelligence, and physical automation continue to blur, firms like Framework Ventures are adapting their deployment strategies to capture opportunities across multiple technological revolutions simultaneously.
