Affiliates of the Fairshake political action committee (PAC)—backed heavily by major industry heavyweights including Coinbase and Ripple Labs—have dramatically escalated their financial footprint in the 2026 midterm elections. Pumping an extra 50% into their initial spending projections, these crypto-aligned political groups are locking horns in what is rapidly shaping up to be a pivotal battleground race for control of the United States Congress.
According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings released on Thursday, Defend American Jobs, a Fairshake affiliate that predominantly channels resources into supporting Republican candidates across primaries and general elections, has unleashed a massive $46.6 million war chest. The group’s expenditures have been poured directly into media campaigns designed to oppose former lawmaker Sherrod Brown while actively bolstering Republican incumbent Jon Husted in the high-profile Ohio Senate race for the 2026 midterms.
This staggering capital deployment marks a sharp, aggressive escalation from what Fairshake originally outlined back in September. At that time, the PAC indicated it initially planned to allocate roughly $30 million toward opposing Brown’s potential return to the United States Senate.
The heavy financial barrage has not gone unnoticed by the targets of the campaign. Addressing the onslaught of attack ads funded by the cryptocurrency industry, Brown offered a blunt assessment during an interview that aired Friday on the political commentary podcast Pod Save America.
"I’ve spent my career taking on Wall Street, taking on big pharma, taking on big oil and been successful in many cases," Brown said during the interview, before turning his attention to his political adversary and the digital asset sector’s financial backing. "Jon Husted is their boy… They know he’s their guy, they know I’m going to hold him accountable and I guess it’s a perfect storm, so they spend literally tens and tens of millions of dollars."
With just under three weeks remaining until the official United States election date, the political battle in Ohio is already well underway, with early voting having commenced ten days prior. Notably, Fairshake’s affiliate is far from the only crypto-aligned Super PAC stepping up its financial commitments while Ohio voters cast their ballots.
The Digital Freedom Fund, a Super PAC established by Gemini co-founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, reported approximately $3 million in ad spending over the course of the week to oppose Brown and lift up Husted. This latest cash injection brings the group’s cumulative media purchases in the fierce Ohio Senate race to a total exceeding $5.9 million.
The current financial push by Fairshake has already eclipsed its heavy spending efforts during the 2024 election cycle. In that previous cycle, the PAC poured $41 million into supporting Republican Bernie Moreno while similarly opposing Brown, who was fighting to retain his Senate seat at the time. During his tenure in Congress, the Democratic lawmaker chaired the Senate Banking Committee and established himself as one of the most vocal, outspoken legislative critics challenging regulatory policies, rules, and laws favored by the digital asset industry.
The political battlegrounds targeted by Fairshake and its network extend far beyond the borders of Ohio as the midterm elections loom closer. Defend American Jobs also reported pumping more than $6.7 million into opposing Independent candidate Dan Osborn in Nebraska’s tightly contested Senate race. Osborn is running a competitive campaign against Republican incumbent Pete Ricketts, a lawmaker who previously voted in favor of major industry-backed legislation, including the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act and the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins Act, while in office.
Cointelegraph reached out directly to both Fairshake and Husted’s campaign organization for official commentary regarding the surging expenditures, but did not receive an immediate response.
How could the 2026 elections shape US crypto laws and policy?
Fairshake has been remarkably transparent regarding its overarching strategic objectives, making no secret of its clear intention to heavily back pro-crypto political candidates throughout the 2026 election cycle. The overarching goal of the network is to populate the upcoming session of the United States Congress with a critical mass of lawmakers who are demonstrably supportive of regulatory frameworks and policies favored by the blockchain and cryptocurrency sectors. Demonstrating the sheer scale of its financial backing, the PAC reported in January that it held an imposing $193 million in cash on hand as it prepared for the midterms.
The financial influence is not limited to Fairshake and the Digital Freedom Fund alone. A broader ecosystem of political organizations and committees aligned with digital asset interests has actively stepped forward to sway the 2026 electorate. The Fellowship committee, a political group backed by major institutional players Cantor Fitzgerald and Anchorage Digital, reported channeling more than $11 million into the political sphere between August 2025 and August 2026. The majority of these funds have been directed toward media and advertising campaigns designed to bolster congressional candidates running for seats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
