A prominent consumer advocacy organization has released a scathing report targeting the digital asset ecosystem surrounding the White House, asserting that US President Donald Trump and his family have left investors significantly at a loss through a series of high-profile cryptocurrency ventures.
According to findings published by the nonprofit watchdog Public Citizen, retail participants and market participants overall have been left an estimated $4.7 billion "underwater" since 2022 through a sprawling portfolio of digital asset projects tied to the president and his relatives. The report points to multiple initiatives that have captured public and speculative attention over the last several years, highlighting a stark contrast between heavy investor losses and substantial personal revenues reaped by the first family.
The consumer advocacy group stated that billions of dollars evaporated or shifted hands through specific offerings, including the Trump family’s World Liberty Financial governance token, a series of nonfungible token (NFT) trading cards launched initially in 2022, the volatile memecoin known as Official Trump (TRUMP), and digital asset treasury allocations linked to Trump Media.
An overwhelming portion of the aggregate estimated losses stemmed from buyers of the TRUMP memecoin, accounting for roughly $3.2 billion in negative returns. Conversely, participants purchasing World Liberty Financial’s USD1 stablecoin have managed to avoid major capital destruction thus far. Delving deeper into the dynamics of the memecoin market, Public Citizen noted that the billions lost in the TRUMP token did not simply vanish into thin air due to technical failures, but instead represented a massive wealth transfer from late-arriving retail buyers to a small, select group of early participants and insiders.
While the broader market nursing these multi-billion-dollar deficits looked for returns, the financial ledger for the president himself painted a strikingly different picture. Public Citizen’s analysis indicates that amid the $4.7 billion in investor drawdown, President Trump personally accumulated substantial windfalls. Financial disclosures show he pulled in $7.2 million from NFT licensing fees and royalties, more than $600 million through World Liberty token sales and equity stake transactions, $635 million in licensing fees connected to his memecoin, and an additional $197 million in revenue generated from capital contributions to World Liberty.

These figures, some of which were officially captured in the president’s 2025 financial disclosures revealing roughly $1.4 billion in total earnings tied to the crypto sector, do not even fully account for the ongoing equity stakes and underlying business positions that Trump and his family continue to hold across the digital asset landscape. The sheer scale of these crypto-related earnings has previously outpaced traditional revenue streams, with filings showing Trump earning more from the digital asset sector than from conventional real estate ventures during certain reporting periods.
The White House has consistently pushed back against scrutiny surrounding these financial entanglements. Cointelegraph reached out to the administration for formal comment regarding the Public Citizen report but did not receive an immediate response. However, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly has repeatedly addressed public and media inquiries concerning the president’s digital asset investments by maintaining that there are "no conflicts of interest."
Despite these assurances from the administration, public sentiment remains deeply skeptical. Recent polling indicates that a strong majority of Americans view the Trump family’s extensive involvement in cryptocurrency investments as inappropriate for a sitting head of state, keeping ethical debates front and center in Washington.
Crypto bill still weeks away from potential vote
As the list of digital asset ventures continues to expand, with industry observers anticipating more projects on the horizon from Trump and his associates, Public Citizen has renewed its urgent calls for strict ethics provisions to be embedded within upcoming federal legislation. Specifically, the organization is targeting the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, arguing that "the president’s policy choices and personal portfolio cannot be separated." The advocacy group insists that any comprehensive cryptocurrency market structure bill must legally require a sitting US president and their immediate family members to fully divest from commercial projects within the industry to prevent glaring governance conflicts.
The push for legislative guardrails comes as Capitol Hill prepares for high-stakes votes on the regulatory framework. President Trump recently met with top crypto company executives, actively urging lawmakers to pass a "fair version" of the CLARITY Act as soon as the Senate returns to official session next month. The legislative path forward includes a pivotal scheduled cloture vote on Sept. 15. To advance past this procedural hurdle and move toward final passage, the bill will need to secure the backing of at least 60 senators, setting up a major political and financial showdown on Capitol Hill.
