Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino Reveals Crypto Giant Holds 150,000 Bitcoin, Exceeding Public Reserve Disclosures

Stablecoin titan Tether holds a massive stockpile of approximately 150,000 Bitcoin, according to a recent revelation from Chief Executive Officer Paolo Ardoino. Valued at roughly $11.5 billion at current market prices, the figure notably surpasses the amount implied by the company’s official public reserve disclosures by some 50,000 coins, shedding new light on the private balance sheet of the world’s largest stablecoin issuer.

Ardoino disclosed the sizable holdings during a keynote address at the Plan ₿ Forum in Lugano, Switzerland. The choice of location was particularly fitting, as Tether has run a dedicated Bitcoin and stablecoin adoption program in the southern Swiss city since 2022, seeking to foster grassroots cryptocurrency integration through local merchants, educational initiatives, and municipal partnerships.

"We have give or take 150,000 bitcoin ourselves. It’s not much, but it’s honest work," Ardoino told the audience in Lugano, striking a casual tone while delivering a statistic that quickly reverberated across the broader digital asset ecosystem.

The claim immediately drew attention because it does not square neatly with the paper trail provided in the company’s regulatory and financial transparency reports. Tether’s third-quarter reserve attestation, which outlines the assets backing its ubiquitous USDT stablecoin, lists $8.37 billion worth of Bitcoin. Based on the valuation metrics in the report—which pegged Bitcoin at $83,621 per coin at the time—that figure implies a backing of roughly 100,060 BTC.

That leaves a variance of about 50,000 coins, worth close to $3.8 billion at prevailing market rates, that the company’s public-facing reserve filings do not explicitly account for. During his keynote, Ardoino did not specify where this additional Bitcoin is held or the exact timeline of its acquisition. Consequently, his comments do not necessarily indicate a sudden, fresh purchase of that magnitude on the open market.

Furthermore, Tether has long maintained a structural distinction between the reserves dedicated strictly to supporting the circulating supply of USDT and its own corporate treasury investments. The company has consistently asserted that profits retained by the firm are managed independently, allowing it to build a separate corporate crypto portfolio alongside its heavily regulated stablecoin backing assets.

Tether’s path toward substantial Bitcoin accumulation has been deliberate and methodical. In May 2023, the firm announced a formal corporate strategy to funnel up to 15% of its net realized operating profits into Bitcoin on an ongoing basis. Crucially, the company stated that it would custody these acquired assets itself rather than relying on third-party institutional custodians, aligning with a philosophy of self-sovereignty and direct asset control.

Tether Holds 150,000 Bitcoin, CEO Says—About 50,000 More Than Its Reserve Report Shows

This accumulation strategy has been heavily fueled by staggering, unprecedented financial performance. Tether reported an impressive $1.5 billion in net operating profit during the third quarter alone, continuing a streak of billion-dollar quarterly profits posted throughout the year. These financial milestones have coincided with a continuous, robust expansion in the global supply of USDT, as demand for dollar-pegged stablecoins remains exceptionally strong across emerging markets, decentralized finance protocols, and international trade channels.

The broader financial health of the company, as detailed in its Q3 report, paints a picture of substantial over-collateralization. The attestation revealed a total of $191.45 billion in assets against $183.50 billion in liabilities. This left Tether with an excess reserve cushion of $7.95 billion, nearly double the $4.11 billion buffer it had reported just months prior in June.

Despite the growing asset base, U.S. Treasury bills continue to form the overwhelming majority of Tether’s reserves, accounting for approximately $132.4 billion of the total portfolio. This heavy reliance on short-term U.S. government debt has positioned Tether as one of the largest buyers of American sovereign debt globally, placing the crypto firm on a financial footing comparable to traditional mainstream financial institutions.

The discrepancy between Ardoino’s stated 150,000 Bitcoin figure and the 100,060 BTC reflected in the USDT reserve report touches upon a sensitive subject for the company. Tether has faced years of intense regulatory scrutiny, skepticism, and public debate regarding whether its USDT tokens are genuinely and fully backed by liquid, high-quality assets at all times.

In an ongoing effort to put lingering doubts to rest and usher in a new era of corporate transparency, Tether initiated its first-ever full financial audit with accounting giant KPMG earlier this year. The transition from quarterly reserve attestations handled by specialized auditing firms to a comprehensive financial audit by a Big Four accounting firm represents a long-awaited milestone for the company and its vast user base.

Beyond balance sheet figures and reserve breakdowns, Ardoino used his platform at the Lugano forum to emphasize the staggering global scale of Tether’s operations. He told attendees that the company now serves more than 730 million users worldwide. According to the CEO, adoption continues to surge at a rapid pace, with the platform adding roughly 30 million new wallets every single quarter.

As he concluded his remarks, Ardoino pitched an expanding suite of open-source technologies funded directly by the company’s immense operating profits, signaling Tether’s broader ambitions to build out decentralized infrastructure far beyond its core stablecoin product.
