Visa Announces Enhanced Capabilities That Can Bring Trust and Control to the Future of Business Payments

Visa (NYSE: V) has announced a significant expansion of its commercial payments portfolio, introducing three major capabilities designed to accelerate commercial card growth, strengthen virtual card security, and pioneer agentic commerce. The new offerings are engineered to help financial institutions, fintech partners, and modern enterprises seamlessly automate their complex payment processes while preserving the rigorous trust, deep visibility, and strict operational controls required for the future of business-to-business (B2B) transactions.

As corporations increasingly look toward digital transformation to streamline their back-office operations, the demand for sophisticated automation has never been higher. Darren Parslow, global head of Visa Commercial Solutions, emphasized the urgency behind these developments. Businesses are moving quickly to automate the work around payments, from identifying supplier opportunities to approving invoices and executing transactions, Parslow noted. He explained that these new capabilities are specifically designed to help organizations accomplish these goals with the essential data, security, and controls they need—whether they are driving commercial card acceptance, safeguarding virtual card payments against sophisticated fraud, or testing how trusted artificial intelligence agents can act securely on their behalf.

Helping Financial Institutions Find Commercial Card Growth

To address the evolving needs of financial institutions navigating the digital shift, Visa has introduced the next generation of its Supplier Enablement Spend Analytics platform, known as SESA 2.0. Building upon four robust years of experience in helping financial institutions evaluate and capture supplier payment opportunities, SESA 2.0 represents a substantial technological leap forward. The advanced platform combines artificial intelligence-driven supplier scoring, comprehensive Visa commercial payments data, granular buyer benchmarks, and sophisticated business-value modeling into a single, cohesive tool.

Together, these integrated capabilities empower financial institutions to pinpoint suppliers who are statistically more likely to accept commercial card payments while accurately estimating broader commercial card growth opportunities within their portfolios. Since its initial market launch, the underlying SESA framework has successfully helped financial institutions uncover more than $600 billion in potential cardable spend, underscoring the massive market opportunity waiting to be unlocked in corporate supply chains.

As business payments become increasingly digitized, financial institutions require both a crystal-clear view of where card acceptance opportunities may exist and the deep analytical information needed to evaluate those opportunities with absolute confidence. Enhanced visibility into card acceptance patterns ultimately helps both suppliers and corporate buyers make much more informed decisions as they modernize their legacy payment flows and optimize working capital management.

Strengthening Trust in Commercial Virtual Card Payments

In tandem with its analytics upgrades, Visa has launched Visa Commercial Fraud Solutions, a comprehensive suite of capabilities specifically engineered to fortify security across commercial virtual card payments and support safer, highly automated payment experiences. This release comes at a critical juncture for the global economy. According to recent market projections from Juniper Research, global B2B virtual card payment volume is expected to skyrocket, reaching an astounding $14.6 trillion by the year 2029. This staggering figure represents a dominant 83 percent share of the entire global virtual card market.

As this rapid adoption continues to accelerate, organizations worldwide face mounting pressure to accurately verify suppliers, securely authenticate users, and ensure that every corporate payment is executed precisely as intended. Visa Commercial Fraud Solutions addresses these vulnerabilities by providing robust protection across three distinct and critical stages of a commercial payment lifecycle.

Visa announces enhanced capabilities that can bring trust and control to the future of business payments

The first component, Visa Commercial Payment Controls, is already available in supported countries and territories to eligible issuing financial institutions, giving administrators granular command over how and where funds are deployed. Meanwhile, the remaining components of the suite—Visa Commercial Virtual Authentication and Visa Commercial Supplier Validation—are currently being evaluated in live pilot programs and are slated for general commercial availability in 2027.

Testing How Trusted AI Agents Can Complete Business Payments

Looking toward the cutting edge of digital commerce, Visa, alongside industry partners BILL and Billtrust, has officially launched a live pilot program that enables trusted artificial intelligence agents to independently initiate and successfully complete approved business invoice payments directly through supplier portals.

This groundbreaking pilot draws its foundational architecture from Visa Intelligent Commerce and Visa’s proprietary Trusted Agent Protocol. These frameworks work in tandem to reliably establish the agent’s digital identity, confirm definitively that the agent is fully authorized to act on behalf of the corporation, and ensure that every single transaction strictly adheres to pre-defined business controls and governance policies.

Rather than relying on vulnerable, shared supplier-portal login credentials—a notorious security weak point for many enterprises—the system leverages tokenized payment credentials. It securely bridges buyer-side invoice approvals directly with supplier-side payment acceptance mechanisms. This innovative approach provides businesses with a secure, controlled environment to test automated execution while maintaining total visibility into who is acting, what specific permissions the agent holds, and which individual transactions have received formal authorization. The pilot is currently live and actively processing end-to-end transactions with a select group of participating BILL customers and Billtrust suppliers.

Building a Trusted Foundation for Automated Commerce

As business payments march further into an era of unprecedented automation, trust has emerged as the essential foundation that allows automation to scale securely and sustainably. The future of commercial payments will likely depend not only on the sheer speed with which money can move across global networks, but equally on whether every market participant, credential, and digital action can be accurately identified, rigorously authenticated, and properly governed.

Achieving this vision requires reliable data, trusted digital identities, and advanced fraud controls that are purpose-built to help approved transactions execute precisely as intended. By making targeted investments across every phase of the payment process, Visa is actively helping businesses maintain unwavering confidence in who is acting, what is authorized, and how payments are ultimately completed. By embedding trust directly into every stage of the transaction lifecycle, the company is positioning businesses to move confidently from approved financial decisions to final execution with enhanced speed, uncompromising security, and total operational control.
