Visa Announces Enhanced Capabilities That Can Bring Trust and Control to the Future of Business Payments

Visa (NYSE: V) has announced a major expansion of its commercial payments portfolio, introducing three advanced capabilities designed to accelerate growth, enhance virtual card security, and test agentic commerce. The new offerings are structured to help financial institutions, fintech partners, and corporate enterprises successfully automate complex payment workflows while maintaining the rigorous levels of trust, visibility, and control that high-value business transactions demand.

The rollout addresses the accelerating digital transformation within the global business-to-business (B2B) ecosystem. As organizations increasingly seek to remove friction from manual accounts payable and receivable processes, the need for robust data intelligence, advanced fraud mitigation, and secure automated execution has never been more critical.

“Businesses are moving quickly to automate the work around payments, from identifying supplier opportunities to approving invoices and executing transactions,” said Darren Parslow, global head of Visa Commercial Solutions. “These capabilities are designed to help them do that with the data, security and controls they need — whether they are growing commercial card acceptance, helping protect virtual-card payments from fraud, or testing how trusted AI agents can act on their behalf.”

Helping Financial Institutions Find Commercial Card Growth

To address the ongoing evolution in commercial finance, Visa has introduced the next generation of its Supplier Enablement Spend Analytics platform, known as SESA 2.0. Building upon four years of proven success in helping financial institutions evaluate supplier payment opportunities and expand commercial card adoption, SESA 2.0 introduces a sophisticated blend of artificial intelligence and comprehensive market data.

The platform combines AI-driven supplier scoring with proprietary Visa commercial payments data, granular buyer benchmarks, and advanced business-value modeling. Together, these integrated capabilities allow financial institutions to pinpoint suppliers that exhibit a higher statistical likelihood of accepting commercial card payments, thereby streamlining portfolio growth strategies and estimating potential commercial card expansion opportunities with greater accuracy.

Since its initial inception, the SESA framework has successfully assisted financial institutions in uncovering more than $600 billion in potential cardable spend. As business-to-business payment flows continue their rapid digitization, issuing institutions require both a crystal-clear view of where card acceptance opportunities exist and the granular data necessary to evaluate those opportunities with absolute confidence. Enhanced visibility into card acceptance trends directly empowers both suppliers and corporate buyers to make more informed, strategic decisions as they modernize their legacy payment operations.

Strengthening Trust in Commercial Virtual Card Payments

Alongside analytics upgrades, Visa has launched Visa Commercial Fraud Solutions, a comprehensive suite of security capabilities engineered to fortify defenses across commercial virtual card payments and facilitate smoother, more secure automated payment experiences.

Recent industry projections from Juniper Research underscore the urgency of these security measures, estimating that global B2B virtual card payment volume will surge to $14.6 trillion by 2029, accounting for 83 percent of the entire global virtual card market. As this adoption rate accelerates globally, corporate organizations face mounting pressures to rigorously verify suppliers, authenticate end-users, and guarantee that corporate funds are disbursed strictly as intended.

Visa Commercial Fraud Solutions provides structured protection across the critical lifecycle stages of a commercial transaction. The suite is anchored by Visa Commercial Payment Controls, which are already accessible in supported countries and territories to eligible issuing financial institutions. Furthermore, the suite incorporates Visa Commercial Virtual Authentication and Visa Commercial Supplier Validation, both of which are currently moving through active pilot phases ahead of a planned general availability release in 2027. These tools are designed to provide a multi-layered defense mechanism, ensuring that commercial enterprises can scale their digital payment programs without exposing themselves to emerging vectors of financial fraud.

Testing How Trusted AI Agents Can Complete Business Payments

In a pioneering move toward next-generation corporate automation, Visa has partnered with BILL and Billtrust to launch a live pilot that enables trusted artificial intelligence agents to autonomously initiate and complete approved business invoice payments directly through supplier portals.

This collaborative pilot draws upon the capabilities of Visa Intelligent Commerce and Visa’s proprietary Trusted Agent Protocol. These foundational frameworks work in tandem to establish the verified identity of an AI agent, confirm that the agent holds the precise authorization to act on behalf of the enterprise, and ensure that every executed transaction strictly adheres to pre-defined business controls and governance policies.

Rather than relying on vulnerable, shared supplier-portal login credentials—a traditional security vulnerability in automated workflows—the system utilizes secure, tokenized payment credentials. It bridges the gap by securely connecting buyer-side invoice approval mechanisms with supplier-side payment acceptance platforms. This sophisticated architecture gives commercial enterprises a secure environment to test automated execution while retaining total visibility into who is acting, what specific tasks the AI agent is permitted to perform, and which transactions have received proper internal sign-off.

The pilot is currently live and actively processing end-to-end transactions involving participating BILL customers and Billtrust suppliers, marking a significant milestone in the practical application of agentic commerce within financial services.

Building a Trusted Foundation for Automated Commerce

As the landscape of business payments undergoes deep automation, the establishment of robust trust serves as the foundational pillar that allows commercial automation to scale securely. The future trajectory of commercial payments depends heavily not only on the velocity at which capital can move across borders and networks, but equally on whether every individual participant, digital credential, and automated action can be reliably identified, authenticated, and governed.

Achieving this level of operational resilience demands dependable data structures, verified digital identities, and sophisticated fraud controls engineered to guarantee that approved financial transactions execute precisely as planned. Through continuous strategic investments spanning the entire payment lifecycle, Visa is actively working to ensure businesses maintain unwavering confidence in every transaction—knowing exactly who is acting, what has been authorized, and how payments are successfully completed. By embedding trust directly into every stage of the transaction process, Visa helps enterprises transition smoothly from approved corporate decisions to final execution with heightened speed, security, and institutional control.
