Forward Industries and Crypto Investment Firm RockawayX Co-Lead $5 Million Series A in Solana-Based Reinsurance Startup OnRe

Forward Industries and crypto-focused investment firm RockawayX have co-led a strategic investment round in OnRe, an innovative startup dedicated to building decentralized reinsurance infrastructure on the Solana blockchain. This significant financial move is designed to bridge the gap between traditional risk-transfer markets and decentralized rails, opening up new avenues for institutional participation in blockchain-based financial products.

The companies announced on Tuesday that they successfully co-led OnRe’s $5 million Series A funding round. As part of this comprehensive strategic partnership, Forward Industries has laid out plans to allocate up to $25 million directly into the platform’s yield-bearing token hosted on the Solana network. The fresh capital injection will be deployed primarily to expand OnRe’s technological platform, scale its operations, and attract a broader base of institutional participants to the burgeoning niche of onchain reinsurance within the decentralized finance ecosystem.

OnRe is actively attempting to shift critical segments of the global reinsurance market—where traditional insurance companies offload portions of their risk portfolios to third-party entities—onto robust blockchain infrastructure. By leveraging advanced tokenization and smart contracts, the startup aims to streamline how underwriting, capital flows, and risk management are handled. This pioneering initiative reflects a broader, highly anticipated push across the financial technology sector to experiment with real-world financial services, including traditional insurance and reinsurance products, directly on high-performance blockchain networks, although widespread adoption across the broader industry remains at a relatively early stage.

Forward Industries, trading under the ticker FWDI, holds a prominent position within the digital asset economy as the largest corporate holder of Solana, boasting more than 7.01 million SOL tokens securely held on its corporate balance sheet, according to up-to-date industry data. Following the investment announcement, Forward Industries’ Nasdaq-traded shares experienced a positive uptick, gaining about 5.8% during Tuesday’s regular trading session, according to data from Yahoo Finance. However, in after-hours market activity, a significant portion of that intraday increase quickly evaporated. Meanwhile, the native Solana token, SOL, was last seen trading at approximately $86.61, registering a solid daily gain of about 2.7%.

Blockchain Pilots Target Inefficiencies in Global Reinsurance Market

While precise figures and industry estimates can vary depending on market conditions, the global reinsurance market is widely valued at more than $600 billion, with continuous growth driven by an escalating worldwide demand for sophisticated risk transfer mechanisms. When examining the broader scope of the industry, total global reinsurance premiums are even closer to a staggering $2 trillion in aggregate value.

In an industry traditionally dominated by legacy systems, paperwork, and manual intermediaries, cutting-edge blockchain-based platforms are increasingly being tested as an efficient way to streamline these complex operational workflows. By introducing shared ledgers for real-time transaction tracking, automated underwriting, and accelerated claims settlement, developers believe decentralized systems can eliminate systemic friction.

It is worth noting that OnRe is not operating in a vacuum in this emerging space. Re, a decentralized reinsurance protocol, represents another notable project aiming to connect institutional capital with fully collateralized insurance risk, simultaneously offering innovative tokenized yield products to market participants. Furthermore, various other protocols are gradually emerging to provide specialized insurance and reinsurance coverage specifically tailored for decentralized finance applications and complex smart contracts, though this broader sector remains experimental and in its formative stages.

Beyond reinsurance protocols, there are parallel efforts underway to apply blockchain technology and digital assets across entirely different segments of the extensive insurance value chain. For instance, major institutional insurance brokerages have begun dipping their toes into the digital asset ecosystem. Notably, insurance broker Aon has previously tested the practical use of stablecoins for handling insurance premium payments, signaling a growing institutional appetite for digital currency rails.

Industry leaders are taking notice of these technological shifts. Tim Fletcher, CEO of Aon’s financial services division, has previously remarked that tokenized assets and blockchain rails are increasingly likely to become deeply integrated into traditional financial systems as the infrastructure matures and regulatory frameworks provide greater clarity for market participants navigating the intersection of traditional finance and decentralized technologies.
